BRENDA AND JACK LONG IN THE SOUTHERN USA
In
October 2003 Brenda and Jack Long who are
my neighbors on
Waiheke Island, New Zealand, visited me for nine days.
We met in Washington DC then drove the Shenandoah Skyline Drive in Virginia to
Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
From there we made several day trips, as you see in the following. The
background music is "Oh Shenandoah."

several
museums and monuments
during our two days in Washington DC. See them here near the Jefferson Monument. ![]() |
The Sunday flea market at
Front Royal, Virginia, is an opportunity to catch a bargain. Somewhere in
the crowd you may recognize Brenda and Jack.

From Front Royal we drove
south on the Skyline Drive through Shenandoah National Park for 100 miles
(160 km) as far as Waynesboro. Then we used the state highways through
Virginia and the Piedmont region of North Carolina to reach Chapel Hill.
Here are pictures taken along the way.

There are many interesting
sights around Chapel Hill, including Duke University with its
well-known gardens and chapel. Halloween is the last night in
October, and pumpkins feature in the festivities.

From Chapel Hill we made a
day trip through beautiful rolling country south to Pinehurst, the golf
capital of the South. On the way we saw fields of cotton and old times
there are not forgotten.
