From April 28 to May 24, 2005, I cycled Britain, starting at Horley near London/Gatwick airport and riding west to Land's End. From there I went west of the Pennines to John o' Groats and Thurso in northern Scotland - the usual "End to End" trip. I took a day-long ferry and bus tour of the Orkneys. I went by train to Perth for two days then by train to Margate in Kent, the easternmost part of southern England. Then I cycled back to Horley by way of Canterbury - I call this "Side to Side." I rode 20 days for 1500 miles (2400 km). The map shows my route (mauve line) and places where I stayed (orange dots).
  From May 6 to May 29, 2006, I cycled from Thurso around the north-west Highlands to Ullapool, by ferry to the Hebrides, around Lewis, down Harris to Tarbert, thence by ferry to Uig on Skye. I rode down Skye, across the Kyle of Lochalsh then south-east to Laggan, Fort William, Glencoe and Kippen. I went across the lowlands to Selkirk then east of the Pennines through England, skirting London to reach Horley. The 1000-mile (1600-km) route is in blue with overnight stops in green.
